There are seven situations in our life when we need to request our boss to provide us with some accommodations. We also need to work from home because we cannot make it to the office due to some serious problems and also cannot leave our job because all work is our priority. In this situation, we can fall back on our employer to provide us with the necessary accommodation.
It is a request letter in which you ask your boss to allow you to have some flexibility in telework because of your disability or any other reason. The employee can either write this letter himself or ask his doctor to write this letter in case his health is the issue.
Common mistakes
If you forget the following points, you will end up writing a letter that will turn out to be useless because the employer will discard it right away:
Giving too many explanations
Your letter should not include a bunch of explanations just because you want approval from him to work from home.
Writing a long letter:
Since you are making a request, you don’t need to write them too long a letter because the employer does not have time to read a long letter
Not providing proof:
Some employees ask for permission to work from home but do not provide any proof to support their request. This also leads to the failure of their request letter.
There are two sample letters given below for you to understand how to ask for accommodations:
1:
Subject: Request for accommodation to work from home
Respected sir,
I am Mr. ABC who has recently been recruited to the marketing department of the company. The purpose of writing this letter is to request reasonable accommodation to work from home. Due to my asthma problem, I am at a very high risk of complications that may arise due to COVID-19. My doctor has advised me to take extra care of myself so that my lungs remain safe.
Based on what my doctor has suggested, I would like to request accommodation to work from home. Please have a look at the attached document of the prescription written by my doctor. According to the law of the state, people who have any kind of lung disease are more vulnerable to the damage caused by the pandemic and therefore, employers are required to accommodate their employees.
Also, please provide me with all the resources that I need to be able to work from home smoothly. If you want to know more about my situation, please contact me or arrange a meeting with me. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
Sincerely.

2:
Subject: Request for [XYZ] accommodation regarding [XYZ] as per [ABC]
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter to request you to provide me with accommodation to work from home. This request is being made because I am unable to come to the office due to my illness. I don’t want to put anyone in trouble and therefore, I take full responsibility for my work and want to finish it in any case. For this purpose, even though I am not in a position to come to work, I am ready to work from home. However, I need cooperation and support from the company.
I am sure that the nature of my job is such that I can easily manage everything working from home. I am requesting accommodation only for the period of one month as my doctor has prescribed for me bed rest for one month. I will be available by phone call 24/7.
Since my situation is genuine and makes sense, I am hopeful that I will get a positive response from your side. I have all the resources that I might need to perform telework. Thank you so much for your cooperation and support in advance.
Yours truly.
